Quite a few media reports have questioned if electric vehicles are greener when emissions generated during manufacturing and charging are also calculated. Dated back May 2017, a research output had suggested,based on data collected in China, that to produce an electric vehicle could trigger an extra 5,000kg or 60% more carbon emissions, than an ICE vehicle, with the biggest disparity seen in battery manufacturing.

In September 2020, an AionS vehicle produced by GAC’s electric vehicle arm reportedly caught fire while driving, marking the third cognate accident in four months. In South Korea, Hyundai’s electric vehicle Kona caused a sum of 13 fire accidents, which was later claimed by investigators to be triggered by internal drawbacks of the batteries. Batteries remain the dominant source of quality issues like fire accidents, leaving works to be done by manufacturers in safety screening and managing supplier mix.
